For most of the last decade, the island's center of gravity has sat at its edges. The beach on one side, the marsh and Breach Inlet on the other, and Middle Street stretched between them like a hallway you passed through on the way to somewhere else. That changed on June 28.
The America 250 commemoration at Fort Moultrie was the loud version of the story. The quieter version, the one that will still be here in October, is the new palmetto-log living exhibit on the Mound at Battery Capron. It has given the middle third of the island a walking anchor it did not have before, and it is quietly reshaping how a July day gets organized here.
